Cosmic Injustice
I was staying at a monastery outside of Richmond, VA a few years ago on a quiet little retreat by myself and I met a man who was recently divorced. His ex-wife ran off with a much richer man and they lived out in the country somewhere. We were sitting down by the river one day and a small private plane came overhead, flying very low, and then dipped below the trees and landed on the other side of the river. This plane was his wife's plane, and she was landing on her new husband's landing strip out behind their house. Until this moment he didn't know where she lived. There is something deeply wrong with this scenario. I've never seen such a look of resignation on a man's face. He couldn't even hide from her in a freaking monastery. Now they've built a superhighway right next to the monastery and, I would assume, these people's house. Maybe that's all the justice one needs.
Now for some Barry Hannah quotes, including the one that made me think of that story. These are both from the collection Airships, from the story "Love Too Long."
"My wife's got a job and she takes flying lessons. When she comes over the house in her airplane, I'm afraid she'll screw up and crash."
